As Northern Ireland Tourism continues to develop, building on the momentum of recent years we require inspirational leadership to ensure we are up to the challenges we will face to 2020.

As a tourism provider, NITB invites you to their annual tourism conference in March 2014. The conference will be entitled LEAD, (Leadership Exploration And Development) which will explore and provide insights into how Northern Ireland can become a world tourism leader. Through expert keynote presentations and world class case studies, you will be armed with strategic insights and key knowledge that can be applied to your tourism business.

We welcome to this year's conference all those who seek to contribute to the visitor economy, those who are passionate about building unique, inspired, visitor experiences and those who intend to grow and develop both themselves and their business.

Introducing our Speakers

Ranulph Fiennes Sir Ranulph Fiennes Bt OBE

Often described as 'the World's Greatest Living Explorer', Ranulph Fiennes also made it into the record books by completing seven marathons on seven continents in seven days - not long after receiving emergency heart surgery. Then he took up climbing, starting with the North Face of the Eiger. At the age of 65, and at his third attempt, Ranulph became the oldest person to conquer Everest.

His presentation will draw a connection between nature's most dangerous and difficult challenges, and the day-to-day hurdles we all face. Teamwork, determination, patience, discipline and creative thinking are vital to the success, and sometimes the survival of Fiennes and his colleagues. We may not risk our own lives in the same way, but all these qualities are equally important in less hazardous occupations.

Ranulph explains the enormous challenge of raising £40 million in sponsorship, finding the right volunteers and planning journeys of immense complexity beset by political, personal, geographical, financial and physical obstacles. Building a team with the right character and attitude is of paramount importance. Persistence, tolerance, fitness, agility and the ability to perform under extreme pressure are all factors in Ranulph's remarkable endeavours - just as they are in any competitive environment.


Anthony Climpson Anthony Climpson OBE., FTS.
Employment & Tourism Manager, The New Forest Destination Partnership

Anthony grew up on the edge of the Cotswolds. He trained as an artist and designer, working in polythene recycling, sales, publishing and listing magazines before being seduced by tourism. He established Dorset's first county tourism service before becoming Destination Manager in the New Forest where he's been for the last twenty five years.

Anthony is the founder of the New Forest Tourism Association, the VICE/VERB model for sustainable destination management and the concept of "The Economics of Visitor Happiness". He is a Past President and Fellow of the Tourism Management Institute, Board Member of the Tourism Alliance and has participated in many national tourism policy and reform activities.

Achieved National Beacon Status for the promotion of sustainable tourism in 2004. International winner of Best Destination & Best Personal Contribution in the 2007 Virgin Holiday World Responsible Tourism Awards. Anthony was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to tourism.


Nigel Burton Nigel Burton
Chairman, Abergavenny Food Festival

Nigel has been Chairman of Abergavenny Food festival for 6 years. The Abergavenny Food Festival is an annual food festival which takes place in the town of Abergavenny in Wales each September.

Before retirement Nigel was the Development Director of Waitrose Ltd and prior to that a Director of Tesco Ltd and Boots the Chemist Ltd. He has held a number of public appointments including President of the British Council of Shopping Centres, Chairman of The Civic Trust, and Founder and Chairman of the Property Managers Association.

Nigel is also Chairman of the Abergavenny Business Club and Director of Capital Region Tourism.

Nigel also has a small hill farm near Abergavenny where he breeds Welsh ponies and Zwarble sheep.


Sarah Stewart Sarah Stewart
Chief Executive, NewcastleGateshead Initiative

Sarah Stewart is the Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, the agency responsible for inspiring people to visit and to live, learn, work in NewcastleGateshead.

Sarah spent her early career with Procter & Gamble (Brand Manager), Price Waterhouse (Consultancy Partner) and Sage Group plc (Marketing Director). Prior to joining NewcastleGateshead Initiative in May 2010, she was involved in a wide range of regional transformation projects with Newcastle Science City (Interim Director), International Centre for Life (Deputy Chair), Port of Tyne (Deputy Chair), Northern Investors Company (Non Executive Director) and Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust (Board Member). Sarah continues to hold a number of non-executive positions with Visit England, Arts Council North, Beamish Development Trust, Newcastle Cathedral Council and Durham University Business School.
